Turned a typically unusable space (landfill) into renewable energy.

The Bedford Landfill Solar Project demonstrates how underutilized municipal land can be transformed into a long-term community asset. While closed landfills are subject to strict environmental regulations that often limit redevelopment opportunities, they can provide ideal locations for renewable energy infrastructure.

This 1-megawatt solar installation was developed on the Town of Bedford’s closed landfill, converting otherwise restricted property into a productive source of clean energy. By utilizing land that is generally unsuitable for traditional development, the project supports local sustainability goals without impacting valuable developable space.

Once operational, the system will generate renewable electricity that helps offset municipal energy costs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions for more than 25 years. The project also highlights the benefits of collaborative planning and permitting, as project stakeholders worked closely together to navigate the regulatory process and advance the project efficiently from concept to implementation.

challenges

  • Permitting was a large hurdle, from interconnection to solid waste department. These are lengthy and complex processes that have many opportunities to be shut down.
  • Optimizing the layout of the solar array due to the constraints of the slopes and tolerances of the solar panel foundations.

solutions

  • The Town persevered for many years and through many law/rule changes and votes. Worked closely with the Town and ReVision to get through the lengthy and complex solid waste permit process.
  • We set up detailed analysis’ and were able to accurately find the most effective layout while adhering to product limitations and state/local regulations.

results

As a result of perseverance and attention to detail, the Town of Bedford now has a 1-MW solar facility offsetting municipal energy costs and emissions for the next 25 plus years. All of this was created while not requiring any deforesting or using other valuable land. The Bedford Landfill Solar project has turned a once unusable space into a green energy source through determination and thoroughness.
